Brief History of the Fremont County Courthouse
The current Fremont County Courthouse (pictured at right), the fourth for the county and the
third at the same site, appears much the same as it did when it was built in
1889. The brick edifice which preceded it was heavily damaged when, during
the Civil War, someone tried to destroy it with a charge of dynamite. In 1888
someone poured coal oil throughout the building, set it afire and
succeeded in destroying it. The culprits were never identified in either incident.
